Drain-O Instant Fix Golf Putting Training Aid
The Drain-O Putting Trainer was one of our favorites at this year’s PGA Merchandise Show. I am usually a bit skeptical about putting aids, but this booth had a buzz with a lot of “whoas!” “wows!” and nodding of heads. When I stepped up it took about 3 seconds to discover a major flaw in my backstroke. Right from the beginning I was opening the face of the putter. It felt completely natural, and I THOUGHT it was square, but by the time I was ready to return the putter head, I didn’t have a chance.
The inventors of the DrainO, showed me the quick 2 step routine to correct the flaw, and feel the perfect putting stroke. A few minutes later I was able to use the immediate feedback from the Drain-O to groove a stroke that stayed square from start to finish. It was really amazing how quickly my muscles were able to learn and adjust.
The Drain-O works by setting up a swing path on a rod suspended in the air between two miniature tripods. The rod has an adjustable arc that creates an inside to outside stoke path (the only natural way to putt). If you are still hanging on to the “straight back and straight through” philosophy, the rod can be adjusted so that is a straight line. Then a assembly is attached to the shaft of your putter that will give you immediate feedback about the path of your putting stroke as well as whether or not you are opening or closing the putter head. You begin with the stroke guide outside the rods to get a feel for the path and clubhead. If you are pulling the putter inside the proper path, the guide will scrape the rod. If you are pulling outside, the gap between the rod and the guide will grow through the backstroke. If you are opening or closing the clubhead, you will see right away that the guide is no longer parallel to the rod. After getting a feel for that, move the rod, between the two halves of the guide. You will feel and hear even the slightest imperfections in the stroke. When you can pull the putter back and through without the guide touching the rod, you have accomplished the perfect putting stroke.
